             Referees Area

             General information for Referees

The Burnaby District Youth Soccer Association is always on the lookout for new game officials. Refereeing soccer can be a very rewarding experience (even on a cold, wet winter day) and can round out your soccer experience.

All youth referees are certified through attendance at a referee clinic. There are five levels for referees:

Class 5: (Recreational) Attained by individuals who have no experience officiating, and are interested in refereeing U-11 and younger. Youth and novice adult referees are encouraged to start at this level. Minimum age requirement is 12. Class 5 referees can also act as Assistant Referees for youth competitive divisions (U-12‑U-18). The cost off courses for Class 5 referee training is approximately $35 and generally is a one-day clinic. Some Burnaby Clubs will assist with the cost of this course.

Class 4: (Youth Competitive) Attained by individuals who have some experience either as players or referees, and who are interested in officiating competitive youth soccer (U12‑U18). The minimum age requirement is 14 years of age. Class 4 referees can also act as Assistant Referees for amateur senior soccer. The cost off courses for Class 4 referee training is approximately $45 and usually involve a weekend clinic (3 days). Participants must pass an exam with at least 75%.Some Burnaby Clubs will assist with the cost of this course.

Class 3: Attained by individuals with refereeing experience at the Class 5 or Class 4 level. Minimum age is 16.

Class 2‑International: Advanced levels for soccer referees and attendance at these clinics is generally by invite only.

                               Jurisdiction of The BDYSA:

Referees are assigned to games by the home team Club operating under the direction and jurisdiction of the BDYSA.

Under this approach the BDYSA is responsible for providing referees for:

  • all divisional boys' games (U12-U18)

  • all district and inter-district cup games (U12-U18)

  • cup games, both district and provincial

  • mini-soccer referees

                              Referee reminders for success:

  1. All referees must be registered - if you have registered, you must complete a refresher course as well, if you have not done either, you must do both! Registration fee is $25 annually. Those who are not registered by the first pay period will receive $25 less on their cheques - this one-time deduction will pay for the registration. You should also make plans to attend a refresher course. You need to do this every year.

  2. All referees must complete and submit a Risk Management form if they are 19 and over.

  3. All referees must read thoroughly all notices provided by the Referee in Chief of the BDYSA.

  4. All referees receiving complaints against them will be assessed at the discretion of the Referee-in-Chief. All referee's are expected to perform at all games at his or her best.

  5. All referees must officiate at all youth levels and help the Referee Coordinator. You cannot simply pick and choose the game that suits you the best.

  6. Referees must record and know what teams they are to officiate when assigned a game by the appropriate referee coordinator. Check and remember this information before every game.

  7. Referees chosen to officiate for Provincial Cup, will be made up solely of those in good standing. If you do not fulfill the requirements and are constantly tardy in your responsibilities, you may be removed from the selection list.

  8. Player ID cards: As of October 1st, all U12-U18 teams must have a complete set of ID cards for all players and officials. The Referee must check the Player Cards before every game!

  9. Don't forget to obtain two copies of team lists and sign them before exchanging with the team officials.

  10. Be sure you know the duration of games for various ages, and the appropriate size of ball for the game.

  11. Game and infraction reports must be filed in a timely manner after every game
